Determining if the Holy Spirit dwells in you (Romans 8:9-11)
Sermon Notes
Proposition: Romans 8:9-11 demands that you accurately identify the doctrine of the indwelling of God’s Spirit and rest in its reality, if indeed the Spirit of Christ is in you!
Does the Spirit of God dwell in you? (v 9)
If the Spirit is in you, then you have been born again. (John 3:3-8; 1 Pet 1:3, 23-25).
If the Spirit is in you, then you will respectfully regard, joyfully receive, rightly understand, and regularly respond to God’s authoritative written revelation, the Bible (1 Cor 2:9-16; 1 Thess 1:4-6, 2:13; 2 Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:19-21).
If the Spirit is in you, then you seek to glorify Christ (John 16:13-14).
If the Spirit is in you, then you have a genuine self-sacrificing love for God, the Church, and those outside of the Church (Rom 5:5; 1 John 3:23-24; Gal 6:10).
If the Spirit is in you, then you have a hatred of sin and a desire for holiness (2 Cor 3:18; 1 Thess 4:3-8).
If the Spirit is in you, then you evidence continual repentance from deeds of the flesh and progressive growth in the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:16-25).
If the Spirit is in you, then you are to be continually filled with Him resulting in inward and outward expressions of worship (Eph 5:18-21).
If the Spirit is in you, then you will pray increasingly (Eph 6:18).
If the Spirit is in you, then you have been given a spiritual gift to edify the Church (1 Cor 12:7, 11; 1 Pet 4:10-11).
If the Spirit is in you, then you will proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:8; 2 Cor 4:13-14).
2. If so, you have the Spirit of Life, now! (v. 10)
3. If so, you will have the Spirit of Life, forever! (v. 11)
