Like the Beasts that Perish (Psalm 49)

Sermon Notes:

Main Idea: Psalm 49 calls us to take three actions so that we will not fear when we see the wicked prosper.

  1. Listen to the Psalmist’s Invitation (vv. 1-4)

    a. The Proclamation (vv. 1-2)

    b. The Promise (vv. 3-4)

  2. Learn from the Psalmist’s Contemplation (vv. 5-15)

    a. Think about his riddle (vv. 5-6)

    b. Look how he resolves it (vv. 7-15)

    i. What he knows about them (vv. 7-14)

    1. Their death is inevitable

    2. Their wealth is inadequate

    a. It can’t redeem!

    b. It won’t remain!

    3. Their honor is momentary

    ii. What he knows about himself (vv. 14-15)

    1. My resurrection is inevitable

    2. My honor is eternal

    3. My God is able

  3. Live out the Psalmist’s Application. (vv. 16-20)

    a. Do not fear! (v. 16)

    i. Their death is inevitable (v. 17, 19)

    ii. Their wealth is inadequate (v. 17)

    iii. Their honor is momentary (vv. 16, 18-20)
