Why should I study Genesis?

Everything flows from the book of Genesis! How did we and everything else get here? Why are we here? Who are we? Who is God? How did God make us? What is God doing in the world? What has gone wrong with the world? What is sin? What is God doing and going to do with sin? How will God save, redeem, and restore humanity? The biggest and most practical questions of life and theology are all raised and answered in the book of Genesis. A proper understanding of the past (the beginning) leads to a proper understanding of the present, and a proper understanding of the future. Genesis teaches us that the LORD alone made the heavens and the earth he sustains all things, and he graciously promises to give victory and salvation to mankind through the promised seed/descendent of the Eve (Gen 3:15). God patiently over generations makes a people and nation for himself from Abraham’s offspring, through whom he will bless all the nations of the earth. Jesus the Messiah is the fulfillment of that promise, and all who have faith in him are counted as children of Abraham, heirs of the coming kingdom and new heaven and new earth all according to the promise God made to Abraham (cp. Gal 3:29, Matt 8:11).

An understanding of Genesis is foundational to everything that comes else that comes in the Bible. You will find this section of scripture deeply impactful and edifying, and also practically important. If you struggle with finding that we hope our sermons below will help!

Genesis 48:15-16:

“The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
    the God who has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
 the angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the boys;
    and in them let my name be carried on, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
    and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
